International Day for Tolerance

23/08/2016 18:17:22

In 1996, the UN General Assembly invited UN Member States to observe the International Day for Tolerance on 16 November, with activities directed towards both educational establishments and the wider public.

When we speak about tolerance and violence, do we know what TOLERANCE really is?

  •   Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. It is fostered by knowledge, openness, communication, and freedom of thought, conscience and belief. Tolerance is harmony in difference. It is not only a moral duty, but also a political and legal requirement. Tolerance, the virtue that makes peace possible, contributes to the replacement of the culture of war by a culture of peace.
  •   Tolerance is, above all, an active attitude prompted by recognition of the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. Tolerance is to be exercised by individuals, groups and States.
  •   It means accepting the fact that human beings, naturally diverse in their appearance, situation, speech, behaviour and values, have the right to live in peace and to be as they are. It also means that one’s views are not to be imposed on others.

FINI Institute Radeče is a home, where tolerance resides. Its roommates are education, learning and devotion. Among the four colourful walls we also meet openness, communication, and freedom of thought. All we need is time, to build a community to fight against racism and discrimination and build bridges of friendship between all people, nations and religions.

‘Say Hello to the World’ is not just a project, where we learn about different cultures and make new friends, but a lot more. It is a step towards the tolerant world that cares about social justice and encourages harmony in difference. The Project is a step towards understanding, which leads to acceptance, since tolerance remains the foundation of a healthy and modern society.

Every individual has the right to be different, but nonetheless be accepted and respected.

This poem was nominated by the UN as the best poem of the year 2008. It was written by an African child.

When I born, I black
When I grow up, I black
When I go in sun, I black
When I scared, I black
When I sick, I black
And when I die, I still black

And you white fellow
When you born, you pink
When you grow up, you white
When you go in sun, you red
When you cold, you blue
When you scared, you yellow
When you sick, you green
And when you die, you gray

And you calling me colored?
