Reformation Day (Slovenia)

23/08/2016 18:17:22

Since 1992, Slovenia has been celebrating Reformation Day as a national holiday, on 31 October. Reformation brought us the first book, the literary language and the first mention of the concept of Slovenes.

The movement in Slovenia was epitomized by Primož Trubar (1508–1586), a Protestant priest who endeavoured to write books in a language that could easily be understood by all Slovenians. His Abecedarium’ spelling-book and Catechismus’, both published in 1550, gave Slovenians the first books written in their language as well as the first books printed in Slovene language. Adam Bohorič also left an indelible mark with the first Slovenian grammar book, the ‘Arcticae horulae’ (1584), as did Jurij Dalmatin with the translation and publication of the entire ‘Bible’ in 1584.

A religious and national holiday, Reformation Day is a sign of respect that the country and all of its citizens pay to a religious minority living in their midst and also a reflection of a broader willingness for openness, tolerance, the acknowledgement of differences and the overcoming of cultural and worldview dissimilitude.

We are also aware of the importance and uniqueness of our language, therefore with this Project we wish to spread not only tolerance, but also to promote our beautiful country and language.

Do you know any Slovene fairy tales, stories or poems? We most certainly must not forget ‘A Little Sleepy Star’, a fairy tale about the youngest star in the sky, or ‘Peter Klepec’ with his superhuman strength as well as the Pedenjped's song which says:

‘Scholar’

Pedenjped Iikes to gobble

All sorts and loads of books.

He reads out loud and approves

All the views without distinction.

He spends his whole days bending over

Studying each and every sheet

His head is weight down with knowledge

So he supports it with his arm.

Domestic noise is not a problem

He goes “lalala” all the time

And if he makes a mistake while reading

He quickly puts his glasses on.
