St. Nicholas Day

23/08/2016 18:17:22

St. Nicholas is the first of the three good men who has visited us. Despite the fact that it comes from the Christian custom he is well known to us, as this is the special day of gift-giving for children. The night before the Feast of St. Nicholas, children put a shoe outside the door, hoping it will be filled with treats of fruit, candies, coins, and small toys. The saint's companion Parkel may leave coal or cinders and switches for naughty children, or more likely, a mix of both, since most children behave in both good and bad ways. St. Nicholas carries a big white book where the names of children are written, the good ones in gold letters and the naughty ones in black letters. The Angels come along to assist in giving gifts and small devils carry chains to frighten naughty children.

So, were you greeted by the sweets or just the switch?
